How not to get ripped off at the mechanic

A short, boring checklist. Pair it with a shop that has a public honesty track record — see Greater LA, NYC, or Chicago.

Before you drop the car off

  1. Know the symptom, not the diagnosis. “Brakes squeal when cold” is better than “I need rotors.” Let the shop diagnose; you describe.
  2. Pull codes yourself if the check-engine light is on. A cheap OBD-II reader (or an auto-parts store scan) gives you a baseline so “mystery repairs” are harder to invent.
  3. Ask for a written estimate before authorizing work. California shops generally must get your authorization for repairs above a stated amount — get it in writing anyway.
  4. Ask what can wait. Honest shops will prioritize safety items and defer cosmetics or “while you’re here” upsells when money is tight.

Red flags

  1. Pressure to approve a long list of work immediately without seeing the car or parts.
  2. Vague line items (“misc labor,” “computer diagnosis”) with no explanation you can repeat back.
  3. Refusal to show failed parts or explain why a part failed.
  4. Quotes that jump dramatically from the verbal number to the invoice with no change order.
  5. Shame or anger when you ask for a second opinion.

Green flags

  1. They talk you out of work that isn’t needed yet.
  2. They offer OEM vs. aftermarket options with tradeoffs.
  3. They show you the worn part or a photo.
  4. Small fixes sometimes get waved or bundled reasonably.
  5. Locals name them specifically in “won’t rip me off” threads — not just “great service.”

Second opinions

For any repair over a few hundred dollars, a second estimate from an independent shop is normal, not rude. Dealerships are often excellent at diagnosis and warranty work — and also often expensive. Compare apples to apples (same parts quality, same labor scope).

Women / first-time car owners

Several LA recommenders specifically praised shops that didn’t treat them as an easy mark. If you’ve been burned before, bring a printed estimate from elsewhere, or a knowledgeable friend — and prefer shops with repeated “no upsell” mentions in public threads.
